Greeting

Greetings to the Readers / Users

Welcome in the new homepage of the Gödöllő Scientific Library of the Szent István University.

Our Library is a university library and also a national public scientific library which serves the alumni, tutors and researchers of the university faculties in Gödöllő and as a public library serves also the people interested in scientific themes of the collection.

The Library began its operation in the same time with the independent Agricultural Scientific University. Its basic stock was the collection of the Agricultural Department of the Hungarian Royal József Nádor University of Technical and Economic Sciences which growth with the melting of provincial libraries of the Agricultural Faculty. The unified shaping of the collection was finished in 1962. Although in his personal biographical data it is not represented in details, but it is known that Domokos Kosáry was a determinant personality of our library. We are very proud to the fact that in the period of total ignority he was working for years as a director of our library. With his leading our library became one of Hungary's largest special library in agriculture.

The Library took place in the eastern wing of the University's old main building, which was previously used as the secondary and boarding school of the Premonstrant order. The spacious reading room, which was the boarding school's refectory is nowadays also as impressive as formerly with it's arcs, and with the gigantic wall-painting of Andor Dudits, depicting the first Premonstrants.

The collections of the Library are quite special and represent unique value. Its present-day stock consists of more than 370.000 documents (books, bounded periodicals and manuscripts). Besides the latest Hungarian and foreign (technical) literature there is also a rarely books collection, in which books are of museum value. Our earliest document is a book from Strassburg, published in 1556 (the Kreuter Buch by Hieronymus Bock), which is a curiosity. With the demand of completeness look after a special collection, in which we collect the publications, documents dealing with the life, the past and the special education of the university.

The Library aims to become a determined, up-to-date and outstanding institution within the life of the university with all its activities. We try to alloy the traditional library with the functions of knowledge collection, trying to form an organic union from the informational databases and electronic documents. The edition and operation of the renewed homepage of the Library is also serves this effort.

We hope that we can welcome you as regular visitor of our homepage. We gladly accept your comments, advices and suggestions, in order to make our tasks even more successfully.

Koósné Török Erzsébet, Head of library
